3D printing, the future of manufacturing

3D printing, also known as "additive manufacturing", is a kind of rapid prototyping technology. It is based on a digital model and uses a bonding material such as powdered metal or plastic to carry out the material by using 3D printing equipment. A new manufacturing technique in which layers are added to create three-dimensional objects. It is a close combination of information network technology with advanced materials technology and digital manufacturing technology.


Compared with traditional casting technology, the biggest advantage of 3D printing technology is that it can realize the manufacture of various shapes without the need of a mold. Therefore, the 3D printing technology is particularly suitable for products that are difficult to mold by casting, complex in shape, and strong in individuality. In addition, in the traditional manufacturing technology, the product mold needs to be debugged several times, and the research and development cost is high. And 3D printing technology can greatly shorten the development cycle and reduce R&D costs.


3D printing technology first appeared in the United States in the 1980s and began to rise in China in 2012. As an important part of advanced manufacturing, the state attaches great importance to its development and has introduced different policy support.

In the field of industrial consumption, due to the continuous development of 3D printed metal materials, 3D printing equipment with laser metal sintering as the main molding technology will achieve relatively rapid development in future industrial applications.

At this stage, major 3D printing companies generally exist in a comprehensive form of material supply, equipment manufacturing and printing services. This is due to the technical promotion and market size constraints in the early stages of industrial development. In the long run, professional links will occur in all aspects of the industry chain. Professional material suppliers and printing companies will emerge, and product design services will be transferred independently or to downstream consumer companies.

In terms of long-term demand growth, manufacturers of upstream printing materials and personal 3D printing equipment will develop even better.
